Energy storage ‘a reality for stable power solutions’

Energy storage is a technology which can deliver stable solutions to the power system.

Energy storage is a technology which can deliver stable solutions to the power system.

That’s the view of Nina Skorupska, CEO of the Renewable Energy Association (REA) who believes this technology “is not an R&D topic anymore, it’s a reality”.

Speaking to ELN at the ‘Energy storage: the new market dynamic’ conference in London earlier this week, she said: “It allows the energy system to become more efficient but it actually does help deliver a low carbon future. When you combine it with renewable energy, there is a real opportunity. The costs of energy storage have come down so much just as some of the renewable energy technologies themselves.”

Ms Skorupska believes the government is aware that energy storage can play “an important role in delivering energy security”.

However she added: “I don’t think yet they know what the full benefits and opportunities can be.”

She insisted the industry is “not looking for subsidies” to develop energy storage in a big scale but they hope the government helps tackle barriers such as regulations for this technology.

“On this topic they are really going to listen to us”, Ms Skorupska said.

Last week, Gordon Edge, Director of Policy at RenewableUK also told ELN policies are the main barrier for the growth of energy storage.

The costs of this technology could fall by 70% by 2030, according to a report from the World Energy Council.
