The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is investing $63 million (£41) in 264 energy efficiency and renewable projects across the country.

It is supporting the schemes through its Rural Energy for America Programme (REAP).

They are expected to generate 207.8 million kWh of electricity – enough to power more than 13,600 homes for a year.

The projects aim to help agricultural producers and rural small businesses use funds to make energy efficiency improvements or install renewable energy systems.

They include solar, wind, biomass, small hydroelectric, ocean energy, hydrogen and geothermal projects.

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said: “This funding will have far-reaching economic and environmental impacts nationwide, particularly in rural communities.

“Investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects supports home-grown energy sources, creates jobs, reduces greenhouse gas pollution and helps usher in a more secure energy future for the nation.”
