Summer has arrived and it’s time to crank up our air conditioners. Temperatures are not the only thing rising. Below are great tips for lowering your energy bill while staying cool this summer.

1) Use ceiling fans to circulate the air.

While this does not lower the temperature in a room, it will make the room feel cooler.

2) Set the thermostat to a comfortable temperature.

The lower the thermostat is set, the more energy is used. Setting the thermostat lower than the temperature you want it will not cool the house down any faster, resulting in wasted energy.

3) Use windows to control airflow

During the late evening to early morning, turn off your air conditioners and open some windows to let in the cool night air. In the morning close the windows and blinds before the day heats up.

4) Lower the water heater’s temperature

It takes a lot of energy to heat up water. Setting the water heater to a warm temperature will allow you to use less water to compensate without the risk of scalding in the shower.

5) Use your dishwasher over handwashing

You can save on water by using your dishwasher. Dishwashers are money savers since they save you both time and water by washing the dishes in bulk rather than one by one. Make sure to wait till the dishwasher is full before washing to maximize its use.

6) Keep your fridge full

This helps by reducing the amount of empty space that is in your fridge. A full fridge has to cool off less air after the door was opened. Frozen or cool foods also help reduce the energy cost of cooling the air in the fridge or freezer.

7) Turn off electrical appliances.

Turn off your electronic devices when you leave the room. Any appliance that is left on will continue to use energy and generate heat.

8) Keep heat sources away from the thermostat.

Sources of heat, such as lamps, will activate a thermostat if too close. To avoid this, keep the thermostat away from anything that gives off heat.

9) Clean Filters

More energy is used when the air duct is clogged. By cleaning the filters, you promote better airflow and faster cooling.

10) Make sure your home is insulated

Insulation prevents heat from entering or leaving your home. A poorly insulated home will run the air conditioners much more than properly insulated homes.

11) Install green lightbulbs

Install LED light bulbs in place of incandescent bulbs. LEDs are proven to use less energy, while producing excellent light, when compared to an incandescent bulb. LEDs last much longer making them a worthy investment.
