At a meeting with the national steering committee for atomic energy workforce training, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam asked ministries and sectors to clarify the atomic energy industry’s workforce demand and train a labor force not only for nuclear power plants but also research and training facilities and other organizations of ministries and sectors.

Insufficient workforce

Dr. Tran Kim Tuan, director of the Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Environmental Physics, Hanoi University of Technology, said that relevant authorities have acknowledged the importance of workforce training since the nuclear power project was kicked off. Many training programs were constructed and implemented inside and outside Vietnam but the nuclear power workforce training program remained less practical.

Preparing training plans according to actual demand

The Ministry of Education and Training continued to work with partners to make atomic energy part of foreign scholarship programs while having preferential policies for people taking part in atomic energy training courses. The Ministry of Science and Technology and Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) sent dozens of people to Russia, Japan and the Republic of Korea (RoK) for short and long-term atomic energy training courses.

EVN General Director Pham Le Thanh said that EVN has plans to receive and use graduates from nuclear power training courses abroad for future nuclear power plants in Vietnam.

According to the Ministry of Science and Technology, it will be necessary to have 6,000 university or higher degree people to satisfy the overall plan for atomic energy application development to 2020, and therefore an additional 5,000 people will be necessary to be trained. However, according to the actual demand, foreign experiences and guidelines of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), just 1,100 people will be necessary to be trained for the nuclear power industry.

The Ministry of Education and Training said that it is important to clarify the demand for the nuclear power plant workforce in the 2020-2030 period as well as the demand for workforce for atomic energy application in the fields of industry, agriculture, healthcare, natural resources and environment, national defense and security and nuclear industry development. An overall workforce training plan will be built based on specific demand data.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam asked ministries and sectors to learn about the atomic energy industry’s workforce demand to have specific workforce training and use plans. He told the Ministry of Science and Technology to work with other ministries and sectors to construct short-term plans for training atomic energy workforces in Vietnam with science and technology funding./.
