Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee has requested the Department of Industry and Trade and the Energy Conservation Center of Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation to undertake the investment project on building an incinerator generator with a capacity of 1,000 tons of waste/day, which generates power from the waste burnt.
The project has US$180 million of investment, using Stoker technology through a Korean Company. Stoker Technology incinerators using JFE hyper grates are capable of treating diverse types of waste with high reliability and durability, including decomposed waste and medical waste.
It is said that this is the first project in Ho Chi Minh City to generate electricity by burning the waste. Before that, the waste utilization for electricity generation had been initiated in 2006, when the Go Cat facility for waste disposal was put into operation in the city. This facility produces electricity by composting the wastes to produce gas. However, electricity yield from this method is still low and economic efficiency is not up to expectation.
Joining the project of burning waste to get power, investors will be exempted from import tax and enjoy reduction of land rental. At the same time, the electricity company is committed to purchase the electric power continuously for 20 year period at the price of 10.05 cents / kWh.
Every day, Ho Chi Minh city discharges about 7,500 tons of domestic waste. Of these, more than 90% is treated by landfill. The remaining 10% is used as compost. When built and put into operation, the hyper grate incinerator as a power plant will help reduce environment pollution, and generate more renewable energy.
