The installation of inverters for the furnace has helped SCM Metal Vietnam Co., Ltd. save 10% on electricity costs.
SCM Metal Vietnam Co., Ltd. is a 100% foreign-invested enterprise specializing in the design, development, and production of sand casting, precision casting, hot forging, machining, and coating. The company supplies products across various industries, including automotive parts, agricultural and industrial machinery components, railway parts, and household goods, serving customers worldwide in North America, Europe, South Korea, Japan, China, and Thailand. SCM’s products are used in vehicles from well-known brands such as Ford, Volvo, VW, GM, Hyundai-Kia, and Samsung.
Since its establishment, the company has continuously improved its processes and expanded production capacity to meet market demands.

Alongside product development, SCM Metal Vietnam prioritizes energy-saving solutions and environmental protection. Implementing energy-efficient solutions has helped the company reduce production costs and increase profitability.
As a key energy-consuming enterprise, SCM Metal Vietnam has established an Energy Management Board to ensure efficient energy use. This board defines specific roles and responsibilities for each member and develops a sustainable energy strategy. Board members receive priority training on energy efficiency, enabling them to educate and implement energy-saving measures throughout the company.
Beyond management strategies, the company has implemented multiple measures to enhance energy efficiency. According to Mr. Le Van Phien, Maintenance Manager at SCM Metal Vietnam, the casting industry consumes significant amounts of electricity, with the company’s monthly consumption reaching approximately 30,000 kWh.
Over the past five years, SCM Metal Vietnam has consistently improved and applied various solutions to reduce electricity use and incorporate renewable energy, including: Maximizing natural light in the factory; Replacing all incandescent bulbs with LED lights; Setting specific time schedules for using lighting systems; Installing automatic sensor-based lighting for internal roads; Using inverter-equipped energy-saving electrical devices; Upgrading machinery and production technology; Utilizing energy-efficient electrical products with energy labels.

Sharing one of the company’s most effective energy-saving solutions, Mr. Phienstated: "The company prioritizes electricity savings and has invested in inverters for the furnace to minimize power consumption. Large motors have been fitted with inverters and flexible electric bars to reduce electricity costs. This solution has helped SCM Metal Vietnam save 10% on electricity costs for the furnace area."
SCM Metal Vietnam has also applied advanced foundry technologies to reduce power consumption further and recycle energy. The company has invested in a fully enclosed automated pouring system, minimizing defective products, reducing labor costs, and lowering power consumption. Compared to older systems, this upgrade has increased production capacity by 40% while reducing electricity costs by 3%.
After casting, sand is reused at 70-100°C, which is too high for effective processing. To optimize this, the company has implemented a fan-based cooling and misting system, allowing sand to be reused without additional treatment.
Installing an inverter for the furnace helps save 10% of electricity costs.
To monitor energy consumption and identify savings potential, SCM Metal Vietnam conducts energy audits every three years. In 2023, the company performed an audit to evaluate current energy usage and develop strategies to minimize consumption.
Thanks to continuous innovation and a strong commitment to energy efficiency and conservation, SCM Metal Vietnam has increased its annual energy savings from 11% in 2019 to 29% in 2023.
"Moving forward, the company plans to recover excess heat from the casting process to reuse in product drying. Additionally, SCM Metal Vietnam aims to install rooftop solar panels to power office lighting and other operations, further reducing reliance on the national grid," Mr. Phien shared.
