The positive trend of sustainable development has made lighting firms realize their responsibility to create “green” values with research and development, in order to develop environment-friendly products, improving life quality of people.

Alex Ngian, CEO of Philips Consumer Electronics Ltd. Co. Vietnam (Phillips Vietnam), said since the establishment of Lighting Bulbs factory in Bien Hoa II Industrial Zone in 2002, the company has been applied “green and clean” procedures with modern equipment from the parent company – Royal Phillips Electronics Corporation (Netherland), a world leader in the field of lighting. “Our aim in Research and Development is to create the lighting products which can provide better life quality, cost and energy efficiency to protect environment and contribute to the sustainable development of society.", added Ngian.

These “green and clean” production lines have brought us highly energy-efficient products, including power-saving compact bulbs, T8 fluorescent lamps with enhanced Electronic Ballast, which are now replacing old, power-consuming products in households.

Le Viet Hung, CMO of Phillips VN received the Saigon Times award for Top 40 – Green Value 2009

In 2009, six of its Lifemax Brightboost fluorescent lamp designs were certified as energy-efficiency by Ministry of Industry and Trade. The company has been awarded Saigon Times Top 40 Award – Green Values 2009 for FDI Enterprises in Vietnam.

The lighting market in Viet Nam has a rather low initial position and still not received much attention yet. Phillips VN’s appreciable effort in developing and distributing power-saving lighting products has hopefully improved the situation.

Some domestic manufacturers have also made positive responses, helping further improve local people’s awareness of saving electricity. By 2008, 20 million compact bulbs were used by households. In addition, many high efficiency lighting models have also been successfully applied so far in supermarkets, shopping centers, office buildings, factories such as Saigon CoopMart, CMC Plaza, Parkson, PetroVietnam, Sky City Tower, Tower CEO, ABB, Brother Industries Vietnam, Sabeco...

These achievements are, however, only the first steps in building a sustainable and modern lighting industry. According to statistics of the Vietnam Electricity Corporation, electricity used for lighting accounts to 25.3% of total electricity consumption, while the world average is only 19%. The main cause is the outdated, power-consuming lighting technology we are using currently. Alex Ngian believes that if this outdated technology is replaced with modern “greener” one, we can reduce up to half of the power used for lighting.

This optimistic comment encourages Phillips VN in developing and distributing “green” lighting to Vietnamese market. It now has an annual show “Phillips Roadshow” introducing energy saving measures to consumers; and a charitable program installing energy-saving light bulbs for the poor.

“Lighting Technology is developing and changing everyday. With our leading position in lighting industry, Phillips VN will continue to bring to Vietnam the latest energy-efficiency technology and measures, in response to Government's energy saving policy and the national target program on energy efficiency,” said Alex Ngian.
