The rise of the electric vehicle segment, as well as the industries which support it, is making companies not usually linked with EVs get into the heat of the moment and announce their involvement in the  market.

Such is the case of American builder Roush, most known for the Mustang tweaks it makes than for its EV approach. Roush, together with electric vehicle charging solutions provider ECOtality, announced it will begin manufacturing the Blink home and commercial electric vehicle chargers.

The chargers, announced by ECOtality this week, will be offered in two models, one for in-home use (residential wall-mount ) and one for commercial use (stand-alone charger). The chargers are currently undergoing testing for Underwriters Laboratories (UL) certification.

“We are proud to have had the opportunity to partner with ECOtality in bringing the Blink chargers to market,” Doug Smith, Roush COO said in a statement.

“ECOtality had a very clear vision for the project and an acute understanding of the public’s needs, which allowed us to effectively leverage our design and engineering expertise. The end result is a truly innovative, outstanding product that will provide drivers an easy and efficient way to recharge their electric vehicles.”

The Blink chargers will be deployed starting through the EV Project. 15,000 units will be installed in 16 cities across the US, in a project worth $230 million.

“Roush's expertise in converting the Blink design into a manufactured product is instrumental to achieving our most important goal: the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in the U.S. and worldwide,” Don Karner, ECOtality president added.
