Soc Trang Province Promotes Biogas Development

26/11/2010

On November 12, the Specialized Science and Technology Council of Soc Trang Province held a meeting to assess the draft of a project aiming to build an improved model of biogas plants to generate power for use by livestock breeding farms in Chau Thanh District. This project is presided over by the Soc Trang Center for Science and Technology Application and headed by engineer Duong Hoang Van, the deputy director of the center’s Technical Department.

On November 12, the Specialized Science and Technology Council of Soc Trang Province held a meeting to assess the draft of a project aiming to build an improved model of biogas plant to generate power for use by livestock breeding farms in Chau Thanh District. This project is presided over by the Soc Trang Center for Science and Technology Application and headed by engineer Duong Hoang Van, the deputy director of the center’s Technical Department.

Statistics of Soc Trang Province show that currently, the province has about 261,000 cattle heads and 4.6 million poultry heads. Those include 225,000 pigs belonging to 121 breeding farms, of which 15 farms with 1,000-3,000 pigs each concentrate in Chau Thanh, Ke Sach districts and the city of Soc Trang, supplying pork to food processing companies.

There are in Soc Trang 54 industrial chicken breeding farms with several ten thousands to more than 100,000 chickens each. With so many cattle and poultry breeding farms, the province has great potential for developing biogas plants. The objective of the above mentioned project is to build an improved model of biogas plants to generate power for use by livestock breeding farms in order to save money and minimize environmental pollution.

Specifically, a new model of biogas plants with HDPE (High Density Polyethylene) cover and a capacity of 1,575cu.m will be built to make use of the droppings of 2,000 pigs to generate power and treat waste water (an objective is to reduce COD (chemical oxygen demand), BOD5 (biochemical oxygen demand in 5) and SS concentrations in waste water by 70-80 percent.

Engineer Duong Hoang Van said, “Building an improved model of biogas plants to generate electricity for use by livestock breeding farms is an urgent need. This solution will help reduce environmental pollution in and around breeding farms to protect human health. It will also help reduce the production cost.”

After listening to the opinions of its members, the Specialized Science and Technology Council of Soc Trang Province has approved the draft of the above mentioned project. However, the council requested the head of the project to add some technical data into the draft.
