Bac Ninh Power Company, with its leading role, has coordinated with local offices, businesses and related units to carry out various energy saving measures such as propaganda, encouraging, pledging, etc to make energy saving a habit of local people.

In 2012, the Company set forth the following targets: saving at least 1% of energy in consumption and service activities, 10% in state offices and businesses, in the Power company itself and in its subsidiaries, 10% in public lighting; reducing 0.2% of energy loss in distribution, at least 1% in focal energy using businesses; reaching a total amount of energy saving of 20.3 million kWh, equivalent to VND25 billion saved in cost reduction in manufacturing, transmission and distribution.

To reach the above targets, the Company has, from the early 2012, enhanced its propaganda activities via various channels such as mass media, and consultation meetings to promote energy saving equipment. It has also initiated competitions such as “the unit saving the most” or “the families saving the most” in the whole company with an aim to saving at least 10% of consumption energy. Promotions for compact light bulbs, solar water heaters have also been kicked off in various points of sale. The company also coordinated with the Centre for Energy Efficiency and Cleaner Production to support the ”Earth Hour” event.

In general, energy saving activities focus on four main areas: public lighting, switching the public lighting system on and off at appropriate time and reducing at least 50% of lighting capacity during evening peak hours. For industrial production, businesses shall check their electricity-powered equipment, eliminate unnecessary pieces, and use electricity strictly in accordance with the power supply contract.

The Company has worked with major customers such as Samsung, Canon, Hanaka, or Catalan who have pledged to save 2% of their power consumption and to restrict electricity-intensive machines during peak hours. The company has also counseled its customers with technical and financial solutions to encourage them to invest in energy-efficient equipment.

In the field of life services, the Company required that their customers switch off at least 50% of their outdoors billboard lighting during peak time and switch off all big billboard lights after 22.00. In administrative and education premises, at least 10% of power can be saved by using natural light, using compact and fluorescent light bulbs, abandoning at least 50% of light bulbs in lobbies, yards, gardens, fences, using air-conditioners only when necessary. Thanks to all these measures, within the first 9 months, the whole province has saved 21.7 million kWh, equivalent to VND26 billion, well ahead of 2012 targets.

As a result of all the measures, people’s and business’s awareness of energy saving has been enhanced remarkably. Most local people and businesses have so far understood policies on electricity saving and energy efficiency, therefore, changing their habit in using energy.
