The Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVN HCMC) and the Ho Chi Minh City Export Processing and Industrial Zones Authority (HEPZA) organized a conference on improving energy efficiency for large enterprises in order to help them implement energy-saving solutions, save costs and improve competitiveness.

According to HEPZA, power supply in Ho Chi Minh City in recent years has been stable, contributing to meeting daily and socioeconomic development needs.

Total power consumption this year is expected to increase by 7.2-8.2 percent while maximum capacity is to increase by 9.91 percent compared to 2013. To meet its goals, EVN HCMC has strengthened management capacity, deployed medium-voltage transmission lines and limited power cuts in the city, especially in export processing zones, industrial zones and large enterprises. In addition, EVN HCMC has deployed the construction of new power grid.

EVN HCMC Deputy General Director Nguyen Van Ly said that in 2013, Ho Chi Minh City saved power of 519.78 million kWh. According to statistics, the industrial sector saved 174.02 million kWh in power, accounting for 33.48 percent of total savings. In the first six months of this year, the city saved power of 228.48 million kWh while the industrial sector saved 57.34 million kWh in power, accounting for 25.13 percent of total savings.

Energy savings in large enterprises has helped reduce costs and improve business performance. In addition, solutions have helped providers reduce pressure on power shortages.

Unilever Cu Chi Factory’s head of the Environmental Department To Quang Thanh said that in recent times, the company has used water heating systems by solar energy and boiler systems by biomass instead of fossil fuels. Thanks to new systems, the company has reduced more than 50 percent of gas emissions into the environment and saved more than 20 percent of power consumption. The whole factory has installed saving-energy devices such as air conditioners and refrigerators mounted with inverters, used compact fluorescent bulbs and switched off lights when not needed, contributing to reducing power consumption by 30-35 percent.

Together with efforts to invest in green technology, EVN HCMC has strongly deployed saving-energy programs. In terms of manufacturing facilities and trading companies, EVN HCMC has implemented solutions to improve energy efficiency such as energy audit, consultancy programs on ESCO service and replacing normal bulbs.

Enterprises should reschedule production to limit electricity usage during peak hours and increase use in off-peak hours, invest in energy-saving production equipment and coordinate with the electricity sector to control power consumption./.
