Promoting the adoption of national standards for energy management systems

On the morning of June 18, 2024, in Da Nang, the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development - Ministry of Industry and Trade, in coordination with the Vietnam Standards and Quality Institution (VSQI), organized a conference to disseminate the national standards (TCVN) on energy management systems.

The conference aimed to raise awareness and promote the adoption of energy management system standards among organizations and enterprises in Vietnam. This activity is part of the Accelerating energy efficiency in large industries through energy management systems, system optimisation and the promotion and adoption of energy efficiency in small and medium-sized enterprises" project (IEEP project), funded by the European Union.
The conference attracted the interest of many industrial enterprises.
Attendees included Mr. Trieu Viet Phuong, Acting Director of VSQI; Mr. Hoang Viet Dung, representative of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development - Ministry of Industry and Trade; Ms. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Lan, national project manager, UNIDO IEEP Project Office; and speakers who are experts in standards, energy management systems, and energy saving, along with 70 delegates from certification organizations, consulting organizations on energy management.
At the conference, delegates were introduced to the comprehensive national standards on energy management and the plan to develop standards by 2025; introduced to TCVN ISO 50001:2019 (ISO 50001:2018) and the assessment and certification of energy management systems according to TCVN ISO 50001:2019; performed energy audits according to TCVN ISO 50002:2015 (ISO 50002:2014); shared experiences in implementing and applying energy management systems in enterprises; and discussed the content of the presentations.

Mr. Hoang Viet Dung, representative of the Department of Energy Efficiency and Sustainable Development - Ministry of Industry and Trade, shared at the conference that according to global statistics, energy-saving activities in some countries contribute an average of about 50% from the implementation of energy management systems according to ISO 50001 standards, which is one of the solutions that have been proven and recognized for implementation in enterprises not only in Vietnam but worldwide.
The conference raises awareness and promotes the application of energy management system standards in organizations and businesses.
The conference provided useful and updated information to organizations and enterprises about TCVN on energy management systems, the requirements and benefits of applying energy management systems. This facilitated and promoted the application of energy management systems in organizations and enterprises in Vietnam; aiming to achieve the national goal of using energy efficiently and effectively.
IEEP Project Information
The overall goal of the Project: To promote and stimulate market demand and the application of energy-saving solutions in industrial enterprises to achieve more efficient energy use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and enhance productivity and competitiveness of Vietnamese industrial sectors.
Implementation period: The project is expected to be implemented over five years from 2023 to 2027.
The project consists of three main components:
Component 1: Strengthening institutional frameworks and policies.
Component 2: Implementing programs for building and enhancing capacity.
Component 3: Implementing projects on energy management systems and system optimization.
Project scope: Focused on 10 target industries including paper and pulp, food processing, seafood processing, textiles, chemical and fertilizer production, rubber processing, metallurgy and steel, cement, plastics, and beverages.
