The smart hotel

In Quang Ninh, in May, the average allocated capacity is just 4.4 – 4.5 million kWh per day (not including capacity for cement factories), while the demand is up to 5.5 – 6 million kWh per day. “That businesses take the initiative to invest in energy-saving systems is primarily for their own economic purpose. Moreover, they have contributed much to the society and shared the difficulties with the community. If each hotel, each factory can save a few thousands of kWh, hundreds of families will have electricity to use”, said Mr. Do.

Mr. Hoang Van Do, Deputy Director of the Electricity of Quang Ninh, has praised Ha Long Dream hotel  as a good example of power-saving model in the city of Ha Long.

“The lobby of the hotel has been open to catch the wind from the sea. Guests have gone to the beach so we just turn on air conditioners in some areas”, Mr. Cao Viet Cuong, Ha Long Dream hotel’s chief engineer of technique explained.

Heading to the terrace, Mr. Cuong pointed to the big cooling tower and said: “This is the water cooling system which discharges the heat for the whole air conditioning system. We use the central cooling and local cooling technology, so cooling devices only operate in rooms with guests or areas which need to be cooled. If we use the common central air conditioner, it will operate all the time at all the places, which causes a lot of waste, especially when there are few rooms with guests”.

Next to the cooling tower are the two tanks filled with 12m3 of hot water which is boiled with oil instead of electricity. According to Mr. Cuong, elevators of the hotel also use the variable frequency technology. They will run with low capacity when lightly loaded and with high capacity when heavily loaded. “Using the energy-saving technology, the initial cost could be 30-50% more expensive than common equipment, but the power-saving equipment can help the unit reduce operating costs, the money saved each month can help the user retrieve the capital in 2-3 years”, states Mr. Cuong.
