New research by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has found most small firms support energy efficiency.
It shows nine in 10 small businesses want to be more energy efficient.
The research found 78% of the 1,077 firms questioned listed savings on energy costs as a motivator for carrying out energy efficiency measures.
But it also uncovered a growing trend of factors other than simple cash savings which are driving investment.

70% of small businesses said protecting the environment was an important motivator while a quarter highlighted improved energy efficiency as a way to attract customers and help promote their business.
John Allan, FSB National Chairman said: “Small businesses are really enthusiastic about energy efficiency and this desire should be capitalised on for the good of their business and the environment.
“However, what our research does tell us is a simple ‘one-size fits all’ approach will not work as different businesses are driven by a diverse range of factors.”
Gab Barbaro, Managing Director of British Gas Business Services, said: “We’re very keen to support our small business customers to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions.
“We’ve already installed 315,000 smart meters for businesses, which help them better understand their consumption and new technology like heat pumps and solar panels which we know can achieve the short payback periods small businesses need.”
