ABB has won a solar order worth $20 million (£12.6m) in Dubai. It will extend the substation at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum solar park, which will integrate more solar energy into the grid.

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), which awarded the contract, aims to double the capacity of the facility to 200MW – enough electricity to power more than 30,000 homes.

ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the substation’s extension.

The company claims the project will displace the need for power from fossil fuels that would have produced around 250,000 tons of carbon emissions annually.

Claudio Facchin, President of ABB’s Power Systems division said: “ABB’s advanced technologies will help to efficiently integrate renewable solar energy into the grid, enhancing capacity and reliability of supplies.”

Dubai has set a target of generating 7% of its total energy output from renewables by 2020 and 15% by 2030.
