A £2.5 million solar farm has officially been opened in Legacy, North Wales.

It is said to be the first solar farm in the country owned and operated by a local authority.

Wrexham Council’s project has 8,800 solar panels which will generate 2,355MWh of electricity every year – enough to power 700 homes annually.

It will also save 1,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year.

The solar farm has been designed, commissioned and built by British Gas.

Chris Morrison, Head of Solar at British Gas Business said: “This project is extremely important – it proves that solar energy is a sound investment not just for commercial organisations but also for councils and the public sector in Wales.

“British Gas is committed to supporting organisations of all types to benefit from renewable technology such as solar energy that will provide them with a reliable supply of power, long-term financial returns and significant carbon reduction.”
