Six miles per gallon doesn't sound like much, but don't tell that to the Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority. The transit authority's new diesel-electric hybrid buses get two miles per gallon more than the diesel-only cousins they are replacing.

Researchers around the world are trying to find new ways to reduce the time required to recharge the electric cars’ onboard batteries. Now, a group of fourteen students from the University of Karlsruhe in Germany have come up with a prototype electric car that is powered by electricity but unlike other electric vehicles, it doesn’t need a recharge.

Struggling Japanese Automaker Suzuki hopes it will fare better in India than it has in the US. To help make sure it does, Suzuki introduced Indian press to a full line-up of clean-burning CNG vehicles earlier this week.

The left side of the chart shows the different sources of energy and the amounts produced. Following the flow of energy from left to right, the pink boxes show where the energy is consumed (electrical generation, residential, commercial, industrial and transportation) while the shades of gray show the amount of energy lost or rejected – often through heat loss. Even though wind energy is a clean and cost-effective source of energy, it does have one slight drawback: no one can control when the wind blows. This occasionally leads to difficulties in matching consumers’ demand for energy with the available supply.

DOE announced on July 22 the creation of the Fuels from Sunlight Energy Innovation Hub to develop revolutionary methods of generating fuels directly from sunlight. The Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis (JCAP), led by the California Institute of Technology in partnership with the DOE's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will operate the initiative.

The United Arab Emirates is a world leader in oil exports, but if Sultan Al Jaber has his way, the Middle East nation one day will become the global leader in alternative energy. "The United Arab Emirates has the third-largest oil reserves in the world. But that does not mean oil and gas will be there forever," said Mr. Al Jaber, an anternationally recognized alternative energy expert.

Students at Cambridge University look towards hydropower to light up homes in developing countries. Deniz Erkan, Li Jiang and Ned Stuart-Smith have developed a portable hydroelectric generator that is capable of producing up to 1kW of power when installed in free-flowing rivers. The 500kg device designed by these third-year students does not require special infrastructure or equipment, it is very easy to install.

All the incidents at the new coal-run thermopower plants in northern Vietnam have been resolved and these plants have resumed operation. The rainy season has begun in both the north and the south while the domestic demand for power consumption does not increase and has even fell by 5-7 percent.

Today a long-standing electronic dream has become a reality thanks to research done by a team of scientists from Bar-Ilan University, Israel, supported by U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Producing superconducting nano-scale wires to facilitate faster and more powerful electronic devices has been the long-time ambition which had eluded achievement until now.

Some young fellows stare at a big TV screen and shout noisily as they are watching a World Cup 2010 football match. Some electric fans run at their maximal speed to soothe the ongoing summer heat. The pigsty system behind the house of Tran Van Tam in Phu Trung hamlet, An Phu commune, Cu Chi district, Ho Chi Minh City also gets cooled with home-made ventilation panels. It is unlikely that the area does not benefit from the national power grid and often incurs power outages.

Một nhóm nghiên cứu của Trung tâm nghiên cứu năng lượng sinh học Great Lakes (GLBRC), thuộc Sở năng lượng Hoa Kỳ (DOE), đã nghiên cứu một phương pháp rất hữu hiệu nhằm giải mã những bí mật xung quanh sự phân rã sinh khối, một bước tiến quan trọng trong việc phát triển nhiên liệu sinh học xenluloza có hiệu quả kinh tế cao.

A research team at the DOE Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) has developed a powerful new tool that promises to unlock the secrets of biomass degradation, a critical step in the development of cost-effective cellulosic biofuels. The details of this method were published online on June 11 in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.
