Both the private sector and government in Korea have increased spending on clean energy and green technology development in the past few years. Korea’s Ministry of Knowledge Economy has worked with private firms to find new improvements in battery technology, photovoltaics, geothermal power generation, and biofuels. And this year, the Korea government expects to inject 1 trillion won (US$900 million) into current and next generation clean energy sources.

This is the finding of a recent US study that was compiled by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory Department of Energy, the University of Maryland and NASA, which introduced a new assessment method to analyze interactions between solar thermal and electrical systems. Benbole Energy Farm, between St Kew and St Mabyn near Bodmin in North Cornwall, has been granted permission by Cornwall councillors following an application to develop the 10-acre site. It means the farm will provide up to 800 homes with green energy. Renewable energy consultants Silicon Valley Limited, who successfully applied for planning permission, say construction work will begin in January.

The Indian state of Gujarat has approved Asia’s first commercial-scale tidal power project in the Gulf of Kutch. Scientists with USDA's Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have found that barley grain can be used to produce ethanol, and the leftover byproducts-barley straw, hulls , and dried distillers grains (DDGS)-can be used to produce an energy-rich oil called bio-oil. The bio-oil could then be used either for transportation fuels or for producing heat and power needed for the grain-to-ethanol conversion. ARS is USDA's principal intramural scientific research agency, and these results support the USDA priority of developing new sources of bioenergy.

Now a Tel Aviv University team has demonstrated how a member of the animal kingdom, the Oriental hornet, takes the sun's energy and converts it into electric power -- in the brown and yellow parts of its body -- as well.

Abengoa Solar Inc. expects to start construction in mid-2011 on a plant in Arizona that will store sun-generated heat to provide six extra hours a day of electric-generating capacity. The heat creates steam that is used to turn power turbines. Abengoa's $2 billion Solana plant is expected to be the first major stored-heat plant in the U.S. when it enters service in 2013. Some already exist in Spain and a few more are on the drawing board for Nevada and California.

Tập đoàn điện lực Việt Nam (EVN) vừa cho biết, trong năm 2011, đơn vị này sẽ xây dựng thêm 5 dự án điện với tổng công suất thiết kế 3.830 MW. Các dự án sẽ được khởi công gồm các nhà máy nhiệt điện Mông Dương 1 (1.000 MW), Duyên Hải 3 (1.200 MW), Vĩnh Tân 2 mở rộng (1.200 MW), tổ máy 2 của nhà máy điện Ô Môn 1 (330 MW) và Thủy điện Sông Bung 2 (100 MW).

Dự báo tình hình cung cấp điện năm 2011 sẽ rất khó khăn, trong đó có nguyên nhân từ thiếu nước, thiếu vốn đầu tư, EVN đã đề nghị Bộ Công Thương sớm trình Chính phủ phê duyệt Cơ chế giá điện theo thị trường và Đề án giá điện năm 2011. Năm 2011, EVN dự báo tốc độ tăng trưởng phụ tải tiếp tục tăng cao, cả năm tăng trưởng hệ thống khoảng 17,63%, đặc biệt là nhu cầu điện trong mùa khô dự kiến tăng 18,3%.

Biofuel technology developer New Generation Biofuels Holdings, Inc., has secured a contract with the City of Baltimore to evaluate its biofuel for use in institutional boilers over a one year period. The maximum volume for the program is capped at 440,000 gallons, said the company based in Columbia, Maryland.
