The training course “Scaling up energy efficiency for energy managers of Pulp and paper industrial enterprises” under the VSUEE Project was organized on 04 August 2025.

As part of the VSUEE Project, the training program to promote energy efficiency for business leaders in the Pulp and Paper industry was held in Ho Chi Minh City on the morning of May 26, 2025.

The paper industry has become a part of the modern economies as it supplies everything from office supplies to packaging materials. And also, this industry is one of the most energy-consuming industries globally.

Energy costs account for 20-30% of total production expenses in the paper and pulp manufacturing sector. Experts believe that the potential for energy savings in this industry is substantial.

Paper industry enterprises account for about 5% of total energy consumption across all industrial sectors, focusing on three key products: packaging paper, tissue paper, and uncoated printing and writing paper.

Valmet has launched a new and patented calendering technology to the market. The new aqua cooling technology improves the calendering results compared to usual paper production conditions.

Researchers at The University of British Columbia (UBC) have helped engineer a new pulp screening technology that is up to 50 percent more energy efficient and is saving Canada’s pulp and paper industry approximately $20 million a year.

International Paper does exactly that, generating 72 percent of its energy from forest residuals. The company has also been working to improve energy efficiency, with a goal of a 15 percent reduction in purchased energy by 2020. An investment of $290 million has led to a reduction of 9 trillion BTUs per year.

From 2006 to 2010, the project "Promoting Energy Conservation in Small and Medium Scale Enterprise - PECSME", funded by the Global Environment Fund and managed by the Ministry of Science and Technology, has implemented 201 projects in the brick manufacturing industry, 144 projects in ceramics - porcelain, 81 projects in the food processing industry, 35 projects in the textile-garment and 38 projects in the paper industry.
