Truong Sa (Spratly) Light Project wins Energy Globe Award 2012

Vietnam won an Energy Globe Award 2012 from experts representing the United Nations, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), World Bank (WB), European Renewable Energy Council (EREC) and Seibersdorf Research Center, for its project on hybrid power system to supply power for Truong Sa (Spratly) Islands and the DK1 marine defense platform in the East Sea.

This national major project has been developed by the High Command of Navy and funded by the Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PVN), with Solar BK importing, installing and operating equipment, training technicians and transferring technology.

The project has been carried out on 48 islands of the Spratly Islands and the DK1 platform, ensuring an adequate power supply for soldiers and people in the area.

Over 5,700 solar panels, over 120 wind turbines, over 4,000 batteries, and nearly 1,000 solar LED lights have been installed, providing 5,167kWh of electricity daily (about 155,000kWh monthly) for the entire Spratly Islands.

The project has contributed to reducing CO2 emissions, one of the main causes of the greenhouse effect and climate change. It is estimated that the system saves over 620 liters of diesel fuel and cuts more than six tonnes of CO2 emissions daily.

Over 1,000 projects and initiatives around the world annually compete for the awards in the Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Youth categories. This is the third time Vietnam won the award.
