Energy Efficiency Office - Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently hosted a meeting with Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) on the project "Supporting pilot production of commercial products using high-efficiency LEDs". The project is a part of the activities under Vietnam Energy Efficiency Program to enlarge the market for commercial products using high-efficiency LEDs.

At the meeting, VAST representatives presented a number of findings in recent years such as surveys, research and market evaluation on technology for LED power switching. Based on these findings, experts conduct research and evaluation of super bright LED technology to select the most suitable products.

Results show that LED, known as the "green" lighting source of the 21st century has many remarkable advantages compared with other current lighting products in the market. Specifically, the LED technology uses high-capacity applications in many diverse fields and can be easily integrated with other technologies. With these features, LEDs can be used to build huge lighting systems with intelligent control systems and high performance. Especially, superior performance of LEDs is the fast luminescence, duration (up to 100,000 hours) and energy saving.

General impression of scientists is that with its superior features, the LED will surpass all other kinds of existing bulbs and within 15 to 20 years, it will completely replace other lamps in global lighting services.

At the meeting, lighting experts revealed that if the trial production of commercial lighting products using LED succeeded, its market expanded, and LED replaced all kinds of CFLs, the total energy saving in lighting of Vietnam will be millions of KWh per year.

Using LEDs instead of CFLs will save 88% of power consumption, replacing fluorescent bulb P will save over 44% of power. If LEDs are to replace CFL, T5, T8 and HPS, Vietnam will save at least 40% of power consumption for lighting.

"Supporting pilot production of commercial products using high-efficiency LEDs” is a promising project in both economic and environmental terms. It is known that VAST has successfully coordinated in several key projects under Vietnam Energy Efficiency Program.
