Asia leader in renewable energy growth

Asia accounted 60% of the global progress on energy access and renewables during 210-212.

Asia accounted 60% of the global progress on energy access and renewables during 210-212.

That’s the headline figure from a new report made by the World Bank which tracks the world’s progress towards three goals: universal energy access, double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency and double the share of renewable energy by 2030.

It stated while global renewable consumption grew by 4% annually, Asia’s renewables such as solar and wind power rose almost by 8%.

However Asia needs to be more energy efficient, it added.

Anita Marangoly George, Senior Director of the World Bank’s Energy and Extractives Global Practice said: “We are heading in the right direction to end energy poverty but we are still far from the finish line. We will need to work a lot harder especially to mobilize much larger investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency.”

The report also claims that more than one billion people in the world still don’t have direct easy access to energy.
