Dual benefits thanks to businesses and people joining hands to save electricity

09/10/2024

Joining hands to save electricity to implement the electricity demand response (DR) program has brought benefits to businesses and people while still ensuring production, business, and daily life. At the same time, it contributes to reducing the pressure on the power supply during the peak season.

Hanoi Power Corporation (EVNHANOI) and its member units have synchronized solutions to increase electricity saving and use DR to ensure a safe, continuous, and stable power supply and bring benefits for businesses and people, contributing to reducing power supply pressure and limiting risks of unsafety to the national power grid system.

Accompanying for implementation

Mr. Nguyen Huu Xuan - Director of Viet Y Aluminum Co., Ltd., said that the signing to participate in the DR program has been implemented by the company since 2023 and will be continued this year.

“Thanks to implementing the DR program during peak hours, the business has saved hundreds of millions of dong in electricity costs each year. Before implementing DR, the average electricity output was about 330,000 kWh/month. After participating in the program, it was reduced to 300,000 kWh/month, a decrease of about 15%. For example, in 2023 we had to pay more than VND 6 billion for electricity, but when implementing DR, we will save about VND 450 million" - Mr. Nguyen Huu Xuan informed.

Besides, the business also installed inverters in some locations to monitor output and increase air- conditioning temperatures to a reasonable level. At the same time, the company promulgated regulations on electricity-saving practices with all workers and employees turning off fans and electricity when not in production positions, avoiding no-load running of equipment, and so on.

The implementation of power saving and DR program has been effective

However, there are still some lines that use electricity during the hours of 22 - 24 hours every day, lasting until about 4 a.m. the next morning. The company still thoroughly implements DR to save electricity. Production efficiency does not change, but when implementing a DR program, it not only helps system safety but also helps save costs significantly.

Ms. Nguyen Kieu Doan (Dong Anh district) shared that her family applies effective electricity-saving solutions such as: Turning on the air conditioner at 26 degrees Celsius or higher, placing the refrigerator away from the wall, and proactively utilizing natural light and wind to reduce the use of lighting equipment, turning off electrical equipment when not in use...

Effectiveness thanks to increased propaganda

EVNHANOI recommends that customers use electricity economically and effectively such as: Turning off unnecessary electrical equipment; and limiting the use of devices that consume a lot of electricity during peak hours (from 12:00 - 15:00 and from 22:00 - 24:00 every day). In particular, paying attention to reasonable use of air conditioning, only turning on the air conditioners when absolutely necessary, setting the temperature at 26°C or higher, etc.

According to Deputy Director of Dong Anh Power Company (Hanoi) Tran Dang Hoan, the company has reviewed and made a list of large customers, especially the group of electricity customers with an output of over 1 million kWh/year, to propagate and mobilize customers to limit production during the hours from 12:00 – 15:00 and from 22:00 – 24:00 daily, during the peak summer period from May to July.

“This work has received the support and companionship of large customers, through which customers could understand and implement load chart shifts; this both supports customers and saves costs for customers. In Dong Anh, there are currently 60 large customers using over 1 million kWh/year that have signed DR commitments; 38/38 customers are using less than 1 million kWh/year signing DR commitments, and thousands of production and business customers and retail customers supporting the electricity saving program" - Mr. Tran Dang Hoan said.

The DR program is one of the solutions to reduce the use of unnecessary electrical equipment, not affecting the production line, and reducing electricity costs by transferring a part of capacity from peak hours to off-peak hours, receiving free advice from the electricity industry on safe, responsible, effective, etc., use of electricity.
