On June 7, in Hanoi, the energy efficiency promotion project in supporting Small and Medium Enterprises Vietnam (MEET – BIS Vietnam) and the Association of Chief Engineers of Buildings/Hotels in Hanoi jointly organized the seminar "Experience in efficiently using and managing water and energy resources in buildings."

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Duong Quang addressing the conference focusing on resolving difficulties for biofuel enterprises in Hanoi said that

To continue implementing activities to reduce greenhouse gas immediately after the expiry of Kyoto Protocol in 2012, Japan begins to deploy a pilot project about Bilateral Offset Credit Mechanism (BOCM). Due to BOCM, Japanese enterprises will lend some countries' enterprises (including Vietnam) to implement energy-saving activities, especially the application of advanced technologies, energy saving with low content of carbon.

Attending the conference were energy experts, energy managers, electric equipment manufacturers and more than 100 enterprises in the province of Dong Nai.

Vietnamese enterprises support the Government’s move to invest in renewable and alternative energy and they accept high energy costs in the short-term to lessen the nation’s dependence on mineral oil and its aim to have a long-term stable price.

Lighting is one of the important industries, which consumes 25% of the total national commercial electricity, plays an important role in socio-economic development of the country, contributes to political and social security of urban areas.

Along with the pressure of raising electricity prices, fuel prices, adjusting the VND/USD exchange rate, price of coal sold to cement households has risen by 40% since the beginning of April, which has added a greater burden to cement enterprises. According to Mr. Nguyen Van Thien, Chairman of Vietnam Cement Association, currently, the total energy costs account for 45% - 50% of cement production costs. An 18% increase in gasoline price, a 15.3% increase in electricity price and a 40% increase in coal price have made price of cement increase by 10% to 15%.

Sa Giang Import Export JSC (Sa Dec Industrial Zone, Dong Thap) is specialized in producing shrimp chips which have been very familiar to domestic consumers. Since late 2010, as part of the project "Promoting energy conservation in small and medium enterprises", the company has implemented energy audit for the purpose of raising the efficiency of energy use.

On the morning of November 25th, as part of the 2nd Exhibition of Energy efficiency product of and renewable energy in Ho Chi Minh city, Ho Chi Minh City Energy Efficiency Center, in collaboration with the project Promoting energy conservation in small and medium enterprises (PECSME), held the Conference reviewing the execution of the project Promoting energy conservationin small and medium enterprises in the 2006-2010 period, in Southern region.

Prime Minister affirmed: “Vietnam highly appreciates potential and technologies of South Korean businesses and calls upon South Korean businesses to continue expanding investment in Vietnam, especially in the fields of economic - social infrastructure development, new energy and material production, high technology product manufacturing, support industry, human resource and health development, and agriculture, forestry and fishery development.”

In June 2009, funded by the National program on energy efficiency and conservation, the Department of Industry and Trade of Lam Dong selected Da Lat Garment Joint Stock Company as one of the two enterprises to implement energy audit. Through surveys and measurement, the advisory group has identified some opportunities to save energy and made some suggestions to help this business implement each step in the process of reducing energy cost.

According to the project of “Promoting Energy Efficiency in Small and Medium Enterprises” implemented by the Ministry of Science and Technology under supervision of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and assistance of the Global Environment Fund (GEF), the Dong Thap Province Center for Industry Promotion and Development Consultancy has carried out an energy audit program at the Ba Tang Ice Company (in Long Thanh Hamlet, Phu Thanh A Commune, Tam Nong District, Dong Thap Province).

According to statistics, every year, the country has to import 6 million tons of petroleum, 40% of which is for transportation industry. The annual costs of importing petroleum and producing electricity have accounted for one fifth of total GDP of the country and has now “consumed” all GDP of the agricultural sector.
