The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is to award bioenergy and biobased products with research grants in order to further the development of sustainable projects.
After the selection process, the chosen projects will implement sustainable regional systems for the production of biofuels.

The projects to receive the grant aree based in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, South Carolina, Texas Utah, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.
Three of the projects in the state of California are looking at the viability and sustainability of utilising poplar, switchgrass and sugarcane feedstocks, while three more projects in Michigan are studying the environmental impact of using particular feedstocks.
