A member of the World Bank Group is working with the Peruvian Government to make buildings more energy efficient.

The International Finance Corporation (IFC) will help develop a new regulatory ‘Green Building Technical Code’ to save energy and water.

Work on the project started in 2014 when the government established a Standing Committee on Green Building.

Latin America is the world’s most urbanised region, where 80% of the people live in cities, with buildings consuming 21% of  water and 42% of electricity. They are responsible for 25% of CO2 emissions.

National reports show buildings in Peru consume 45% of the total energy generated in the country and consumption is on the rise.

This effort is part of a global program which IFC has undertaken in order to help Colombia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Vietnam, among other countries, to develop green building codes.

Marc Tristant, IFC Country Head and Representative for Peru, said: “The government and the private sector in Peru are succeeding in developing practical instruments designed to deal with climate change and promote green building.

“This is an important step in this direction.”
