Van Hoa Clinker Plant Applies Energy Efficiency and Conservation Measures

29/07/2025

Following the implementation of numerous electricity and energy-saving solutions, the Van Hoa Clinker Plant has saved around 40% of its total annual electricity consumption in recent years.

Recognizing that electricity and energy efficiency, and conservation are key factors in reducing product costs, increasing employee income, and protecting the environment, in 2018, Thailand's SCG Group decided to invest in the construction of a Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) project at the Van Hoa Clinker Plant with a capacity of 10MW. This project officially went into operation in 2019 and has continued ever since.
Mr. Vu Duc Thuan, Deputy Head of the Maintenance Department at Vietnam Construction Materials Joint Stock Company (VCM), shared: "WHR is a system that recovers waste heat from the clinker cement production process in boilers to generate steam. This steam is then fed into a turbine and generator system to produce electricity, thereby reusing energy for the plant. The current WHR system at the Van Hoa Clinker Plant helps utilize almost all waste heat generated during production to generate electricity, reducing emissions by about 40,000 tons of CO₂ per year. The dust concentration emitted into the environment has also significantly decreased, meeting the strict environmental standards of the EU and G7..."
The WHR project at the Van Hoa Clinker Plant, with a capacity of 10MW, has been in operation since 2019.
In recent years, alongside improving the quality and efficiency of its production and business operations, the Van Hoa Clinker Plant has remained focused on electricity and energy-saving solutions, environmental protection, and green growth. In addition to investing in the WHR project, the plant has also simultaneously implemented many other effective energy-saving measures, such as installing inverters for high-capacity motors, replacing traditional bulbs with LED lighting, building hot air ducts to recover heat after the tower for coal grinding to improve energy efficiency. In February 2025, the Van Hoa Clinker Plant installed a 102kWp rooftop solar power system to partially replace electricity from Vietnam Electricity (EVN); utilizing steel slag to replace laterite in blending materials (turning steel plant by-products into clinker plant raw materials to reduce the use of natural resources containing Fe₂O₃); planting greenery across more than 193,638 m² of land, etc.
The Van Hoa Clinker Plant is part of the Quang Phuc Cement Plant project, invested by VCM, and was licensed for operation in 2013. By March 2017, VCM officially became a subsidiary of Thailand's SCG Group.
Deputy Head of the VCM Maintenance Department, Mr. Vu Duc Thuan, shared that to ensure electricity and energy-saving efforts are effective, the leadership of the Van Hoa Clinker Plant has directed all officers, employees, and workers to use electricity safely and economically, avoiding the operation of electrical equipment when not truly necessary. In office areas, natural light and ventilation are encouraged to reduce unnecessary electricity consumption. During the dry season, the plant prioritizes operations during off-peak hours to help prevent overloading the national grid and avoid paying high electricity rates that would increase production costs.
Electricity and energy savings are currently an urgent global issue. Therefore, the power and energy-saving solutions being implemented at the Van Hoa Clinker Plant also aim to respond to and effectively implement the spirit of Directive No. 20/CT-TTg dated June 8, 2023, from the Prime Minister on enhancing electricity saving during the 2023–2025 period and in the following years. Especially, these efforts aim toward green technology and greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies, contributing to fulfilling Vietnam's commitments at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26).
