The second largest offshore wind farm in the world has officially been opened in Wales.

The £2 billion Gwynt y Môr wind farm is located eight miles off Liverpool Bay and has a capacity of 576MW.

In total, 160 turbines will produce enough electricity to power around 400,000 homes.

Energy Secretary Amber Rudd said: “This offshore wind project will generate enough clean electricity to power hundreds of thousands of homes and will support 100 long term, skilled engineering jobs, giving more people the financial security of a regular pay packet.

“Gwynt y Môr has a key role to play in our long-term plan to develop a secure energy mix in this country that is diverse and home grown.”

The project is a joint venture between RWE (60%), Stadtwerke München (30%) and Siemens (10%).

RWE has also launched a £19 million community benefit fund.
