Energy Efficiency in Food Processing Sector

"Food processing industry - strategy sector study and subproject pipeline development for improving energy efficiency with integrated ozone and climate benefits" with budget of up to USD200 million.

On October 29th, Opening Ceremony of "Food processing industry - strategy sector study and subproject pipeline development for improving energy efficiency with integrated ozone and climate benefits" was held at Melia Hotel, Hanoi. The Ceremony is under the Project: "Vietnam Energy efficiency for industrial enterprises (VEEIE), scheduled to implement in 2016-2020".

The ceremony included attendants from WB, Ministry of Industry and Trade, related administrative branches, investors, associations, enterprises in food-processing sector and energy service companies.

The project will provide financial aids for energy efficiency projects, contributing to reach national target of saving energy, reduce green house emission. Also, it aims at eliminating obstacles, creating advantages for industrial enterprises to access financial sources of their energy efficiency projects.

Energy efficiency potential in food-processing sector

Research of the project indicated that outdated industries consume much energy, accounting for 20 - 30% in food - processing sector.

According to Vietnam National Energy Efficiency Programme, food-processing industry accounts for 3.986 kTOE, equivalent to 19.2% in total industrial energy consumption of Vietnam.

Potential of energy saving in food-processing sector is 20%, the most used fuel is electric (45%) and fossil fuels, primarily coal (21%).

Despite being the most potential in energy saving, most SMEs in food-processing sector have not applied energy - saving solutions and most of them are still using outdated and low energy-efficiency equipment.

Technical and financial support

In framework of the project, WB cooperates with General Department of Energy to develop the project of technical support "Food processing industry - strategy sector study and subproject pipeline development for improving energy efficiency with integrated ozone and climate benefits".

Project's target is to estimate potential of energy saving and offer instruction of raising energy efficiency for food-processing sector in Vietnam. List of efficient projects will be judged upon results of research and then they will receive financial aids from WB through VEEIE with total budget up to USD200 million.

According to benchmarking experiences, potential of energy saving through upgrading energy management and manufacture process is high, up to 40%. Potential of energy saving in freezing is from 20 to 40%.

Raising energy efficiency in manufacture will contribute to eliminate outdated equipment; therefore, reduce CO2 emission and stop global warming.
