World's largest offshore wind farm in Thames Estuary expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The world's largest offshore wind farm has delivered its first power to the grid, marking a major milestone for the flagship project in the Thames Estuary.
Construction of the first 630MW phase of the London Array offshore wind farm is now due to be completed by the end of this year, with the final turbines being installed over the next few months.
The consortium developing London Array, consisting of DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar, today confirmed that power had been successfully generated by the first handful of turbines to be installed and connected to the grid.
As of today, 151 of the planned 175 Siemens 3.6MW turbines have been installed. Once complete, the project is expected to provide enough power to supply 470,000 homes.
"The London Array project will be the first of the next generation of larger offshore wind farms and we are pleased to have reached first power," said Benj Sykes, wind UK country manager at DONG.
"Being able to efficiently develop large offshore wind farms and harvest the scale advantages in both construction and operation is an important element in our continuous efforts to bring down costs of energy of offshore wind."
The news comes just days after the London Array consortium submitted plans for a second phase for the project that could bring the total size of the London Array to 870MW.
The planning application includes detailed proposals on how the second phase of the project can be developed without impacting local bird-life populations.
