Opening the bus route using compressed natural gas in HCM City

10/09/2011

That Sai Gon Passenger Transport Co., Ltd is allowed to borrow the State with the interest rate of 0% and exempted from the tax of importing 50 CNG buses has laid the foundation for the development of green buses in Vietnam.

In August 2011, HCM City opened a green bus route using compressed natural gas (CNG for short) which runs on route 1, Ben Thanh - Cho Lon bus station. This is the first green bus route in the country.

According to Mr. Tran Quang Phuong, Director of Ho Chi Minh City Transport Department, 21 CNG buses running on this route will contribute to reducing environmental pollution and saving fuel costs.

The commissioning of the CNG bus route is the result of nearly three years of implementation, including the importing of 21 vehicles in phase 1 and the assembly of 29 vehicles in phase 2. The most obvious effect of CNG buses is fuel costs saving while they reduce 30-45% of fuel costs compared with buses using gasoline. They also minimize environmental pollution, especially toxic gases harmful to human health such as carbon monoxide, nonmetal hydrocarbon, nitrogen oxide...

Compared to other bus companies in operation, the bus line using compressed natural gas which has just been put into use has many new services in order to improve the quality of passenger service. Each bus is equipped with a device to monitor its route, speed, whether it runs on time or not, whether it has air conditioner turned on at reasonable temperature to ensure passenger service or not. Passengers traveling on these buses pay fare on automated ticket machines. Each vehicle has an electronic information board for the passengers to grasp the bus’s operation and may leave their comments in the mailbox. These buses are equipped with LED electronic letter boards at the top so passengers waiting at the station can see from afar the code and name of the bus route.

That Sai Gon Passenger Transport Co., Ltd is allowed to borrow the State with the interest rate of 0% and exempted from the tax of importing 50 CNG buses has laid the foundation for the development of green buses in Vietnam.

To develop this type of bus, the city Department of Transport is proposing City People's Committee to support non-state units in the development of CNG buses. The Department has also recommended the City to let units investing in CNG vehicles enjoy the norm and unit price of vehicles using diesel fuel. That shall help enterprises eagerly invest in CNG buses.
