After a total investment of US$700 million, the power plant comprises two SGT5-4000F gas turbines, two heat-recovery steam generators, an SST5-5000 steam turbine, three SGen-1000A air-cooled generators, electrical equipment, and ancillary and auxiliary systems that can produce 4 billion kWh per year, worth VND4.5 trillion ($215 million).

The plant will be fuelled by natural gas processed at the offshore Cuu Long and Nam Con Son oil and gas fields. At the inauguration ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said the plant would contribute significantly to the country's energy security and to helping curb power shortages in the dry season.

Hai asked PetroVietnam Power Corp to developing its human resources in order to ensure that the power plant is operated efficiently and carefully, allowing it to better contribute to the country's socio-economic development.

Viet Nam is one of the fastest growing countries in Southeast Asia and its power demand is increasing by 11 to 13 per cent annually, according to figures from Electricity of Viet Nam.
