Vinh Phuc has more than 2,200 enterprises, of which two thirds are small and medium. There is a wide variety of industries such as food processing, textile, leather, wood, forestry, paper, and steel. Especially, Vinh Phuc is one of the provinces with the highest output of baked tile and brick in our country. Specifically, with about 900 manual brick facilities over nine districts, Vinh Phuc’s tile brick output is around 900 million pieces per year.

In the 1990s, the solar energy technology was introduced into Vietnam through projects funded by the governments of Spanish, Dutch, French and German. Many solar energy projects have been put into application since then, mainly to meet electricity needs of people in remote and rural areas, where the national grid has not reached. Before joining the cleaner production component in the industry (CPI), during the production process, Ngoc Lap tea factory used to encounter major environmental problems such as high concentration of dust, noise pollution, and smoke from burning coal, which directly affected the working conditions of employees, worsen living condition in the neighborhoods and schools near the factory. The amount of carbon dioxide emission from the plant is about 2,500 tons per year.

Cassava is widely known as a popular food used for breeding activity and in some other food processing industries. Few people, however, know that cassava is now the main material for producing the E5 bio-gasoline. While preparing for the market introduction of E5 bio-gasoline, Petrol Viet Nam Corporation and PV OIL have already set up a plan to plant cassava to use as raw material for production of clean gasoline.

The first building construction using non-fired building materials in Ha Noi is the Keang Nam 70-storied building. The owner of this project has transported the entire discarded constructional materials and soil from digging the foundation to Hue Quang Commerce and Technology Joint stock company (Hue Quang Company). This company will buy the discarded soil from Keang Nam to produce non-fired eco bricks and sell them back to Keang Nam. This is regarded as the model that sets the trend of using environment friendly materials in Vietnam.

Many simple methods can be applied to save at least 5-10 percent of electricity consumption, for example turning off electrical equipment when use is not necessary or operating air conditioners at suitable temperatures. However, many companies still ignore these simple methods.

Only with 4 simple solutions including: improving the lighting system, disposing of and replacing motors with speed regulator, re-using condensed water and rearranging paper pulp containers, the company has saved more than VND130 million each year. At present, company leaders with technical experts are studying efficient energy saving solutions.

The Song Hau Power Center is defined as a regional power center whose core functions are to supply power to the national power grid (mainly serving southern areas and ensuring national power balance) through the 220/500kW north-south power transmission line. The center will include three coal-burnt thermo-power plants: the Song Hau 1 power plant (2x600MW), the Song Hau 2 power plant (2x1,000MW) and the Song Hau 3 power plant (2x1,000MW) and other associated infrastructure projects.

A firm processing catfish for exports, Dai Thanh Ltd. Co. (Song Thuan, Chau Thanh, Tien Giang) has invested in a solar water boiler system, saving a large amount of energy. They are also the first in Tien Giang to make use of solar energy in hot water provision.

Hanoi International Marine Trade Center Building – Ocean Park (located at number 1 Dao Duy Anh Street, Dong Da District, Ha Noi) was built in 2001 and put into operation in early 2004. With a total floor area of 34,640 sqm, having 21 stories including a commercial center and office blocks, the building consumes a huge amount of energy annually.

In the early July, in Ha Long city, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program (VNEEP) cooperated with Quang Ninh People’s Committee to organize “Effective energy saving lighting models in Northern provinces” media event. The event will contribute to propagate policies and develop public highly efficient lighting models as part of VNEEP.

The Sheraton Hotel won a First Energy Efficient Building Prize in 2009, which recognizes the hotel that was rebuilt to be energy efficient, green and environmentally friendly. The Sheraton Hotel was one of three buildings in Hanoi that took part in the contest and won a prize. Sheraton Hanoi has also led in applying the ISO 14.001 international environmental protection system.

Like other cities in the central region, Quy Nhon faces difficulties in raising capital sources, therefore, the expenditure for high-efficiency public lighting remains limited. Most of the investment capital for implementing public lighting projects comes from the local budget.

With the above awareness, some State employees in Thai Nguyen province (most of them have retired), have established the Nui Coc Lake Hydropower Joint Stock Company. They have withdrawn some amounts of money from their saving accounts to invest in the construction of a small-sized hydropower plant near the southern dam of the Nui Coc Lake, Phuc Triu commune, Thai Nguyen city.

To 2009, 97 cement production lines have been put into operation in the whole country, with the total designed capacity of 57.4 million tons. In 2010, it has been estimated that 13 more production lines would be completed, which will raise the total capacity by 11.7 million tons. In 2011, 12 more lines will be put into operation, the total capacity is estimated to increase by 9.36 million tons.

Using clean energy is a weapon in the fight against climate change. Ho Chi Minh City is considered to have a rich solar resource which has not yet been exploited and used wisely. Recently, although Ho Chi Minh City Hi-Tech Area and 23-9 Park has installed 32 lamp posts using solar power, it is still too small in comparison with actual demand. Is it due to the lack of funding or a hesitation to invest?
