The Song Hau Power Center is defined as a regional power center whose core functions are to supply power to the national power grid (mainly serving southern areas and ensuring national power balance) through the 220/500kW north-south power transmission line. The center will include three coal-burnt thermo-power plants: the Song Hau 1 power plant (2x600MW), the Song Hau 2 power plant (2x1,000MW) and the Song Hau 3 power plant (2x1,000MW) and other associated infrastructure projects.

Electricity consumption was reduced by 7 to 10% compared to 2008; in the first 3 months of 2010, 5% of electricity consumption was cut down, compared with the same period in 2009. Those are the first benefits that energy efficiency methods have brought to the Landmark building in Ho Chi Minh City.

A firm processing catfish for exports, Dai Thanh Ltd. Co. (Song Thuan, Chau Thanh, Tien Giang) has invested in a solar water boiler system, saving a large amount of energy. They are also the first in Tien Giang to make use of solar energy in hot water provision.

Hanoi International Marine Trade Center Building – Ocean Park (located at number 1 Dao Duy Anh Street, Dong Da District, Ha Noi) was built in 2001 and put into operation in early 2004. With a total floor area of 34,640 sqm, having 21 stories including a commercial center and office blocks, the building consumes a huge amount of energy annually.

In the early July, in Ha Long city, Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology and the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Program (VNEEP) cooperated with Quang Ninh People’s Committee to organize “Effective energy saving lighting models in Northern provinces” media event. The event will contribute to propagate policies and develop public highly efficient lighting models as part of VNEEP.

The Sheraton Hotel won a First Energy Efficient Building Prize in 2009, which recognizes the hotel that was rebuilt to be energy efficient, green and environmentally friendly. The Sheraton Hotel was one of three buildings in Hanoi that took part in the contest and won a prize. Sheraton Hanoi has also led in applying the ISO 14.001 international environmental protection system.

Like other cities in the central region, Quy Nhon faces difficulties in raising capital sources, therefore, the expenditure for high-efficiency public lighting remains limited. Most of the investment capital for implementing public lighting projects comes from the local budget.

With the above awareness, some State employees in Thai Nguyen province (most of them have retired), have established the Nui Coc Lake Hydropower Joint Stock Company. They have withdrawn some amounts of money from their saving accounts to invest in the construction of a small-sized hydropower plant near the southern dam of the Nui Coc Lake, Phuc Triu commune, Thai Nguyen city.

To 2009, 97 cement production lines have been put into operation in the whole country, with the total designed capacity of 57.4 million tons. In 2010, it has been estimated that 13 more production lines would be completed, which will raise the total capacity by 11.7 million tons. In 2011, 12 more lines will be put into operation, the total capacity is estimated to increase by 9.36 million tons.

Using clean energy is a weapon in the fight against climate change. Ho Chi Minh City is considered to have a rich solar resource which has not yet been exploited and used wisely. Recently, although Ho Chi Minh City Hi-Tech Area and 23-9 Park has installed 32 lamp posts using solar power, it is still too small in comparison with actual demand. Is it due to the lack of funding or a hesitation to invest?

In Bac Ninh Province, there are many occupational villages and recycling facilities currently producing non-ferrous metal, which offers a high economic value for the local population. However, as these facilities are located among residential areas, waste and emission from the manufacturing process directly affect the residents nearby, disturbing their livings.

The Prime Minister has approved of the Nuclear power development plan in Vietnam in 2010 – 2030. There are 8 construction sites proposed for building nuclear power plants in 5 provinces, including: Ninh Thuan, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen, Ha Tinh and Quang Ngai, each capable of installing 4 – 6 units.

In 2004, the second production line was installed, bringing the total designed capacity to two million square meters per year, in the meantime the company took over the Binh Duong Cotto Brick Factory, a unit under the Xuan Hoa Construction Ceramic Company (also a Viglacera member). Besides, efforts were made to build the Hoanh Bo Brick Factory with an annual capacity of 80 million bricks employing coal gasifier tunnel-kiln technology (the first tunnel-kiln factory in Vietnam using the technology).

Energy Efficiency Office - Ministry of Industry and Trade has recently hosted a meeting with Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) on the project "Supporting pilot production of commercial products using high-efficiency LEDs".
The project is a part of the activities under Vietnam Energy Efficiency Program to enlarge the market for commercial products using high-efficiency LEDs.

First Solar has contacted Ho Chi Minh City Hi-tech Park, Tan Phu Trung Industrial Park and Phong Phu Industrial Zone to build a factory on an area of 72 hectares. First Solar’s products include the first photovoltaic thin panel battery. However, due to requirement of large area, the High-tech Park will no longer be suitable, therefore, First Solar must find venue in two other locations.

SaigonBus Co., Ltd will import 21 buses which run on CNG to replace a few buses on route 1 from Ben Thanh market to Binh Tay market. After being imported, these buses will be tested in 6 months before the People’s Committee makes the decision on the subsidized rate for vehicles using clean fuel.

After it is collected, waste plastic will be crushed down and burned at the temperature of 350 degrees centigrade under the condition of oxygen shortage with steam supplement to obtain crude oil. Crude oil will then be treated to obtain petrol and diesel oil.

The project developer, the Dong Xuan Joint Stock Company, is responsible for carrying the project pursuant to regulations enacted by the Hanoi People's Committee. The tramcars must strictly adhere to existing state laws on road transport. The project review meeting will be held periodically every six months to draw valuable experiences for further implementation.
