Vietnam to develop nuclear energy for peaceful purposes

The IAEA Director General emphasized that ensuring nuclear safety and security is now the agency’s top priority, especially after the recent Fukushima nuclear incidents in Japan.

Minister Quan made this commitment while receiving Professor Yukiya Amano, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Hanoi on October 4.

He spoke highly of the agency’s recent technical assistance, saying it helped Vietnam improve its officials’ capacity for research, applications, and management, as well as for putting nuclear applications into practice.
Mr. Quan asked the IAEA to continue helping Vietnam build a legal framework for nuclear power safety, approve nuclear power plant designs, and support capacity building for management agencies in line with international standards.

The IAEA Director General emphasized that ensuring nuclear safety and security is now the agency’s top priority, especially after the recent Fukushima nuclear incidents in Japan.

The IAEA is responsible for helping its member nations, including Vietnam, develop nuclear applications with the highest level of safety, said Professor Amano, adding that it appreciated Vietnam’s initial successes towards developing nuclear power.
