Vietnam: Power for lighting doubles other countries'

24/04/2015

According to statistics from the General Department of Energy (MOIT), currently, the power consumption for lighting accounts for 35% of total power consumption of the country. Meanwhile, this indicator in other countries only accounts for about 15-17%.

Our country's electricity demand is growing very fast, about 13% / year by 2010. After 2011 due to the economic slowdown, electricity demand has decreased slightly, but so far has reached approximately 10%. According to the master plan of national energy development, the domestic energy demand/supply may be unbalanced and Vietnam could become an energy importing country after 2016.

Facing such power consumption, the issue of power saving is extremely urgent. In the professional assessment, the electricity demand growth increases two times faster than GDP growth. The energy consumption for a product or for one dollar value is much higher in Vietnam when compared to the rate of other countries around the world. Thus, the energy saving potential in Vietnam is huge.

In particular, when 35% of total power consumption is used for lighting, Vietnam has a very large saving potential if advanced technology is applied to lighting to achieve the world’s standard norms.

According to experts’ calculations, lighting in buildings accounts for 20% -40% of the consumed power. With the growth of the floor area of commercial buildings and high-rise condominiums in Vietnam, which is planned at 6-7% / year, the amount of power for lighting will increase even more.
