Vietnam needs a long term strategy for the development of renewable energy

In Sep in Hanoi, Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry, under the sponsorship of Det Norske Veritas Group (DNV), and Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD-VCCI) collaborated to organize the Conference "Sustainable energy in the electricity sector".

The workshop aimed to raise the awareness of sustainable development of the business community, especially in the energy sector of Vietnam.

The workshop had the attendance of nearly 40 representatives and leaders from companies under Vietnam Electricity Corporation, Petro Vietnam Power Corporation. There were also state management agencies such as Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Science & Technology and Vietnam Institute of Energy; a number of organizations and foreign embassies were also present such as the British Embassy, Norwegian Embassy, Embassy of the Netherlands, Entec AG organization and SN Power organization in Vietnam.

The conference's main speakers were Mr. Soren Karkov, Director of Renewable Energy, DNV Singapore and Mr Kelvin Tan, Senior Consultant, DNV Singapore Clean Technology Centre. These two speakers had valuable experience on the pre-feasibility analysis of international projects, resource assessment and economy evaluation.

According to Ms Pham Thi Thu Hang, General Secretary of VCCI, Vietnam has remained backward in the development of renewable energy compared to other countries in the region and the world, and it is time to take stronger and more specific steps to develop this energy source. Vietnam has large potential to develop renewable energy sources but the exploitation is too limited. Therefore, Vietnam should have a long term development strategy, in which renewable energy is a wise choice.
