Households a click away from energy efficiency with new online tool

Free British Gas tool shows property owners what energy-saving measures they are eligible for under Green Deal and ECO schemes

British Gas has unveiled an online tool to help households find out what energy-saving measures they could be entitled to under the government's energy efficiency schemes.

By answering a few quick questions, householders including non-British Gas customers can see if they are eligible for subsidised insulation or boiler installations as part of the Green Deal or Energy Company Obligation (ECO). In some situations, British Gas also offers to carry out an eligibility check over the phone or a free survey at the property.

The Green Deal offers loans to property owners to cover the cost of installing measures, while ECO mandates utilities to fund insulation for poorer households. In the first half of this year British Gas has committed to investing £300m in ECO and expects to invest £1.4bn by 2015.

Claire Williams, managing director of British Gas New Energy, said: "This new tool is a quick and free way to gain some really useful information about how to improve your home, cut energy use and help keep bills under control this winter and in the years to come.

"With an estimated £1 in £4 spent on heating bills wasted due to poor insulation, British Gas is installing energy efficiency measures for all eligible households, not just our own customers, and we're keen to help as many people as possible take advantage of these measures that are available under ECO and the Green Deal."

In related news, Willmott Dixon, Sustainable Building Services, Forrest and Mitie have been approved to manage a four-year energy improvement initiative to overhaul 200,000 social and private-rented homes in North Wales.

Work is being delivered through the ECO scheme, which has been established by Wrexham County Borough Council. Neighbouring authorities at Flintshire, Conwy and Denbighshire are also entitled to access works through the contract.
