Vietnam students participated in a fuel-efficient car invention contest

2012 Shell Eco Marathon Asia Contest held at Sepang International Racetrack (SIC), Malaysia, from July 4 - 7, 2012, attracting participation of more than 1,000 students from 119 teams in 18 countries in Asia and the Middle East, including Vietnam.

According to Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Malaysia, on the morning of July 6, Vietnamese students made up of four groups from three universities: University of Technology in Hanoi, University of Technology and University of Industry in Ho Chi Minh City, with their designs and inventions have officially entered the race after passing the technical design round a day earlier.

This is a contest that encourages students’ creativity and research on the technology which can improve fuel efficiency and transport efficiency, simultaneously reduce CO2 emissions. The teams must design and manufacture cars that can run the longest distance with the lowest fuel consumption.

They can join either or both Prototype and UrbanConcept categories. Prototype category allows students to advance teams into the future through the test model, optimize energy efficiency through the innovative design elements such as reduce drag - which is commonly used in Formula One racing. Meanwhile, the UrbanConcept category has preference for practical experience that truly meets driver’s demand. UrbanConcept vehicles are similar to cars used in real life in form and durability. The competition has 28 awards with a total amount value to 42,000 USD.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mr Tran Tuan Anh and Vietnamese Ambassador in Malaysia Mr. Nguyen Hong Thao visited and encouraged the Vietnamese students.

In an interview with Vietnam News Agency correspondent in Malaysia, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, who also is the principle of the University of Industry, Ho Chi Minh City said the contest goal is to help students to access to the current development trend of modern technology, especially in the transportation sector as well as energy efficiency.

Deputy Minister expressed his wish to the student participants, the young generation who represent Vietnam in this competition, striving with utmost confidence in the contest through acquired knowledge and experience which will ultimately impact on research in learning and teaching in school, and motivate a general movement in the creation of research in Vietnam universities. This is very helpful for creative and professional capacity of the young generation of Vietnam in the future.
