Producing Oil from Waste Plastic

13/06/2010

After it is collected, waste plastic will be crushed down and burned at the temperature of 350 degrees centigrade under the condition of oxygen shortage with steam supplement to obtain crude oil. Crude oil will then be treated to obtain petrol and diesel oil.

Dr. Huynh Quyen, the director of the Oil Refining Technology Research Center of the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, said that he has done research and successfully recovered diesel oil and petrol from waste plastic products such as empty bottles, nylon and injection needles by hydrothermal method.

Dr. Quyen said that 1,000kg of crude oil can be obtained from every 3,000kg of waste plastic. Waste oil is used as fuel during the burning process. This project contributes considerably to environmental protection.
