Optimization of System to Improve Energy Efficiency

13/06/2015

A system of optimization can reduce half the power consumption compared to ineffective practices.

On June 11, 2015 in Hanoi the project completion workshop was concluded for the Project "Promoting energy efficiency in industry through system optimization and energy management standards in Vietnam".

The project was implemented in 4 years, starting from July 2011, under the guidance of the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the coordination of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the Global Environment Facility (GEF), Vietnam Environmental Protection Fund and other relevant organizations.

The overall objective of the project is to improve energy efficiency in industry through optimization of the steaming and air compression system, with application of ISO 50001 standards.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Do Duc Quan, Deputy Director of Energy Department appreciated the project's achievements. At the same time, he expressed gratitude to the international organizations, including UNIDO in supporting the enactment of the Law on economical and efficient use of energy and the National target program on economical and efficient use of energy.

Mr. Do Duc Quan, Deputy Director of Energy Department (MOIT)

He said: "The project has helped build technical human resources, the financial funding to support the implementation of standards ISO 50001, optimize the energy management system in industrial enterprises in Vietnam. The Ministry of Industry and Trade appreciates the activities of the project. The project has helped create a movement to build an energy management system in accordance with ISO 50001, and to apply system approach in Vietnam".

Mr. Patrick J. Gilabert, head of UNIDO Representative Office in Vietnam

Mr. Patrick J. Gilabert, head of UNIDO Representative Office in Vietnam stated: "Vietnam is facing a shortage of energy due to high oil prices, reduced hydropower supply, reduce energy reserves due to inefficient use of fossil energy sources. Therefore, companies need to focus on energy efficiency. However, many Vietnam businesses have only focused on improving the efficiency of the engine components, while leaving the integrated management system unattended. A system of optimization can reduce half the power consumption compared to ineffective operating system."

Project Officers, Energy Specialists in the Workshop

Also at the workshop, the energy experts delivered the presentation on experiences and lessons learned for the application of ISO 50001 for energy management system in Vietnam. At the same time, cases studies in steam system optimization and air compression systems for businesses were also shared and discussed.

Within the framework of the project, there are 10 demonstration sub- projects on energy management system and 30 sub-projects on system optimization. The project also provided training on energy management system for 54 trainees, comprising officials and engineers from 179 enterprises.

Consequently, 77 companies applied energy management system, out of which 15 companies were certified with ISO 50001. As a direct result from the implementation of the energy management system sub-projects, the system optimization saved more than 56,034 MWh and 21,735 TOEs and reduced the emissions  of 106,394 tons of CO2.
