The use of solar power in aquaculture

Engineer Nguyen Dinh Minh Toan, Saigon Electronics and Industrial Services JSC (Ho Chi Minh City) and his colleagues have successfully studied the application of solar energy in aquaculture to help farmers reduce costs, save monthly energy and fuel and protect the environment.

Power supply of the model includes two 85 W solar panels located at positions which facilitates the absorption of radiation from the sun to provide power for the entire system.

Power storage device is two 12VDC batteries which are connected to have the capacity of 24VDC, supply power to the lighting system, power converter, 120 W DC aeration motor and water pump motor.

These panels absorb solar energy and then transfer it to the battery system. Power from the battery will be supplied to oxygen pumping devices. Oxygen is pumped to positions near the bottom of the pond through air ducts. The supply of oxygen is combined with the periodical use of microorganisms to improve water quality in the pond. The entire system uses power produced from the heat absorbed from the sun.


Test results have shown that, in addition to saving fuel costs, this solar air pumping system eliminates the possibility of environmental pollution, does not create contaminated substances in the ponds system and does not create noise.

According to engineer Nguyen Dinh Minh Toan, the cost for initial installation of the system is still high and the capacity is reduced on rainy days. However, this system ensures continuous power supply during the aquaculture process when the weather is stable, has high level of safety due to the use of low voltage direct current and can be widely applied.
