VADODARA: Earth hour, a commitment to save the world from global warming and environmental degradation, was celebrated by NCC Group Baroda on March 23

VADODARA: Earth hour, a commitment to save the world from global warming and environmental degradation, was celebrated by NCC Group Baroda on March 23, wherein nearly 13000 cadets spread over southern Gujarat participated by switching off the lights of their establishments and spreading the word around.

"Cadets, true to their qualities of leadership, emulating their dynamic qualities ensured the spread of the message across the length and breadth of Gujarat," said additional Director General, Gujarat NCC, Major General Dilawar Singh, adding, "They ensured that their observance was not restricted to their own organisation but the 'commitment to saving the environment' is spread all over by displaying posters in public places and interacting with people, conducting lectures and raising slogans to create awareness about the need to save the Earth".

Earth Hour, started in 2007, is celebrated on the last Saturday of March every year, after the move was initiated in Australia. People around the world express their commitment to preserving the planet by switching off their lights for one designated hour on this day. India observed its first Earth Hour in 2009 with people in 56 cities switching off the lights. The movement has been gaining momentum with each passing year and more and more organizations are coming forward in its support.

"It is not about merely switching off lights for an hour, but , it calls for individuals and organisations to adopt simple renewable energy solutions in their lifestyle and business operations so as to move towards a sustainable future by promoting use of recycled products and solar powered home appliances", said Maj Gen Dilawar.
