Australian Minister for Climate Change Greg Combet (Labor) has highlighted the contrast with Liberal Party plans to abolish the Renewable Energy Target (RET) if elected, which he says would take the nation backward. The Climate Change Authority's RET review was published in December 2012.

“The Government’s decision on the key design features of the RET will ensure the 20 per cent target is a minimum, leaving the way open for improvements in energy efficiency to deliver a higher share of renewable energy,” stated Minister Combet.

“Arguments to reduce or cap renewable energy at 20 per cent of generation in 2020 ignore the need to reduce the emissions-intensity of Australia’s electricity sector so that we remain competitive as the world moves to clean energy.”

28 of 34 report recommendations accepted

Minister Combet notes that the Climate Change Authority's report stressed the need for policy stability for the renewable energy industry, a point which has been repeatedly stressed by the solar and wind industries in many nations.

The Labor Government plans to leave the broad design of the RET intact, and implement minor changes to contain costs and improve program efficiency.

The Government has accepted 28 of the report's 34 recommendations, with another three accepted in principle subject to further consultation, and three rejected.

Australia will hold parliamentary elections in 2013.
