Wind Power Plant To Run on Phu Quy Island

25/09/2010

The project on construction of a wind power electricity plant on Phu Quy Island has been implemented by the PetroVietnam Power Corporation. The project costs VND335 billion. The plant has capacity of 6MW and includes three 2MW turbines. The plant produces about 25.4 million of kWh annually. It will connect with the 22kV network and work smoothly with the diesel power plant located on the island. The project occupies permanent and temporary areas of 0.74ha and 0.87ha respectively.

When the project comes into use, it will contribute to solve problems of electricity shortage on the island, lengthen time of using electricity to meet daily demands of local people, promote social and economic development, create jobs for local people, enhance the environment protection and reduce electricity production cost thanks to decreasing the diesel electricity plant operation time.

At present, the diesel electricity plant meets the whole electricity demand of the island. It has capacity of 3,000kW and supplies electricity for just 16 hours per day (from 7h30 to 23h30). It is estimated that electricity supplied for business demand in 2010 will be 8.2 million of kW/h. In addition, people and businesses have to purchase electricity generators by themselves with capacity of 1,000kW to meet their demands.

It is the fifth projects in terms of wind power approved in the province. The project was amended by the province’s Department of Industry and Trade to create foundation for the investors to perfect dossiers and start the project in the forth quarter of 2010.
