Singapore households more energy efficient

21/07/2009

Latest figures from SP Services show that the average household electricity consumption per month from January to April this year was about 430kWh, 1% lower compared with the same period last year.

Following the launch of NEA's five-year, 10% Energy Challenge campaign in late April, the average monthly consumption was about down almost 4% between May to August over the corresponding period last year.

In particular, the month of August recorded the sharpest drop of more than 8% over the same month last year.

The 10% Energy Challenge, which was launched in April, is the centerpiece of public education on energy conservation targeted at households.

"It takes time to change habits so we are encouraged by the drop in average consumption numbers.

"Singapore households are beginning to realise the twin benefits of how energy efficiency helps them safeguard the environment as well as money," said NEA's Chief Executive Officer Lee Yuen Hee.

Other initiatives by the NEA aimed at households include the energy labelling for refrigerators and air-conditioners which was made mandatory early this year.

The scheme was introduced to help consumers make more informed choices in picking these appliances.
